Fostering Employment With Solar Skill Development Under Project Uddyam

  • Fostering Employment With Solar Skill Development Under Project Uddyam Redington Foundation’s Uddyam project is in line with India’s Renewable Energy Sector and aims to create a skilled workforce expanding clean energy. Establishing a strong solar energy sector demands growing number of experienced and skilled individuals equipped with advanced technical knowledge. As part of our CSR initiatives, we launched Project Uddyam to train young individuals with high-quality skills and ensure they are ready to be employed in the solar energy sector. Project Uddyam is a solar training program that offers theoretical and practical training. It trains on a set of technical and regulatory core competencies and advanced tools offering solutions for effective integration of renewables in emerging energy markets. The project focuses on training unemployed rural youth, fostering local enterprise and job creation. The training interventions include
    • Solar PV Manufacturing technician training for 55 working days
    • Solar Lighting technician training for 60 working days
    • 2-months on-the-job training in collaboration with industry partners
Creating Real Impact by Creating Livelihood Opportunities Under this project, several young individuals were trained. However, one story of impact stood out reflecting how such programs help in equipping individuals to make a mark in the growing energy sector. Sidharth Kishorbhai Patel’s Story of Determination and Growth Siddharth Kishorbhai Patel, a young man hailing from the quaint town of Amadpor Desaiwad in Gujarat, crafted his path to success through determination, opportunity and the right skills. He had managed to complete his high school education, despite the limited educational facilities available in his hometown. However, he lacked the qualification and skills to get gainfully employed. By enrolling into the Uddyam Solar Lighting Technician programme, Siddharth recognised the opportunity he had to enhance his skills and broaden his horizons. This decision proved to be pivotal in shaping his future. The certified training programme had given him the foundation needed to pursue his dreams. Armed with newfound knowledge and expertise in solar technology, Siddharth seized the opportunity when he was selected to join the prestigious Neom Project in Saudi Arabia. His journey from a small town in Gujarat to securing a job at one of the most ambitious solar energy projects in the world serves as a testament to the power of dreams and opportunities that await those who dare to pursue them. Kamlesh Ankushbhai Koli’s Story of Becoming Solar Warrior Kamlesh Ankushbhai Koli grew up in a remote village where power cuts were frequent and he grew up watching his parents struggle under dim light of kerosene lamps. This made a deep impact, and he dreamt of bringing light to lives of many around his home and his home. However, financial hardship forced him to take menial jobs to support his family after completing his schooling. With renewed hope, Kamlesh joined the Solar PV Manufacturing course at Anil Naik Technical Institute, where his purpose was ignited again. He was fascinated by the concept of harnessing electricity via sunlight. Kamlesh was a quick learner, often staying back after sessions to understand the finer points of solar panel assembly. solar panel assembly. His dedication and curiosity set him apart. His trainers were impressed by his innovative thinking and willingness to work hard despite all odds. After completing the course, Kamlesh was placed as a Solar Panel Assembly Operator at Pahal Solar. The first time he held a fully assembled panel in his hands, he couldn’t help but smile-he was now part of the solution he once wished for as a child. Kamlesh’s story is about a dream rekindled, a purpose rediscovered, and a life transformed. He is no longer just a dropout boy from a village-he is now a solar warrior, bringing brightness into many lives, just like he once wished someone would do for him. Building a Workforce for Tomorrow Like Siddharth, there are many youths who have benefited from Project Uddyam. The initiative has helped in creating a specialised local workforce through capacity building activities on energy access and offering decentralised renewable energy solutions to unemployed rural youth.

From absenteeism to attendance: empowering girls through gender-friendly WASH facilities

  • From absenteeism to attendance: empowering girls through gender-friendly WASH facilities Redington foundation’s effort to support schools with WASH (drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene) facilities has positively impacted educational outcomes. A thorough assessment across urban-poor communities in west bengal, haryana, assam, and tamil nadu, led to identifying the reason behind increasing school dropouts, majorly due to poor WASH facilities. As part of our CSR initiatives, we addressed the issue via integrated water and sanitation projects, that helped in creating lasting welfare for the students. Gender-friendly wash facilities address challenges of adolescent girls Every child is entitled to school and education. School is where children spend most of their, yet for adolescent girls, it often becomes a place of discomfort during menstruation. The lack of proper washrooms and menstrual hygiene facilities has long contributed to absenteeism and even higher school dropouts. To address the issue and help adolescent girls better manage their menstrual health and hygiene, redington foundation initiated WASH projects – setting up sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators in schools, as part of the project. Access to cleaner washrooms and training on menstrual hygiene management provided with better awareness among girls, which helped in breaking social stigma around it. Priyodarshini mayur’s story – real impact created Priyodarshini mayur, a student of class-10 at bauria girls’ high school used to skip school for 2-3 days every month during her menstrual cycle. When asked why, she said, “earlier there were no facilities for menstruating girls in the school. So, I was avoiding using the toilet during my periods to save myself from infection and preferred missing school. Not only me, many friends of mine also went through the same situation. Now that WASH project has constructed a new sanitary block along with a changing room with sanitary napkin vending machine and an incinerator, the long-prevailing problem is finally gone.” Priyodarshini added that the awareness-generating sessions helped her a lot. She could now freely discuss her issues relating to menstruation with her friends and family. She now attends school regularly with a happy face. Breaking the stigma and teaching better menstrual hygiene In uluberia, west bengal, girls from samaj kalyan sangha balika vidyalaya often missed school during menstruation. It was majorly due to unclean school toilets, lack of running water, and dilapidated condition of toilet seats. Also, girls often were prone to infection due to unhygienic conditions of toilets and preferred to stay home during periods. WASH project constructed and renovated existing gender-friendly toilets with running water facilities in the school. Changing room facility along with sanitary vending machine and incinerator to dispose of used napkins further improved health condition. Discussions with adolescent girls about menstruation cycles and their impact on health helped in reducing stigma around it. These interventions helped girls with access to safe, clean toilet facilities and maintain menstruation hygiene. It helped in reducing absenteeism and fear of infections from using unhygienic toilets.

Providing high standard hygienic facilities to students

  • Redington collaborated with WASH Institute to transform the Uluberia Municipality’s hygiene facilities, which included various schools with washrooms in dire conditions. WASH Institute found that children in these schools had no access to improved and functional Water, Sanitation and Hygiene facilities.

These conditions forced students, especially girls to discontinue the use of washrooms. A number of girls started skipping school because of unhygienic toilet block. Girls also stopped drinking water and started holding urine for long period of time. Holding urine for such a long period is not a good practice and might lead to serious health issues.

Child Cabinet Members actively participated to build sanitary blocks for schools with a change room installed with a manual sanitary napkin vending machine & electric incinerator. The purpose of this drive was to cause a behaviour change in girls who were struggling with hygiene issues.

Boosting education with tech-based Foundational Literacy Numeracy (FLN) tabs

  • Redington along with Learning Link Foundation has worked to enable better learning among school students. Students, especially those who were impacted by Covid-19 and needed extra help & assistance in basic subjects used technology-based FLN tabs. These tabs equipped with applications like read along for Tamil and Tux Maths app helped many underprivileged students overcome challenges and learn conveniently.

Prior to the implementation of the FLN Tab project, many students struggled with identifying basic numbers from 1-10, reading Tamil letters and doing basic addition. Students who faced a roadblock in their education due to Covid-19 were suffering from a lack of confidence in their classes.

After the FLN Tab project was introduced, students are showing progress and improvement in both of these subjects. Withing a few months of the project, students gained confidence and started to show increasing interest in studying these subjects.
